From November 12 to 16, at the invitation of the North America Alumni Association of Renmin University of China (RUC), Prof. Wu Xiaoqiu, Vice President of the RUC Alumni Association, former Vice President of RUC, Dean of the National Academy of Financial Research (NAFR), and Distinguished Professor (First-Class), visited Boston and New York to attend the “North America MindForum 2025 Annual Conference.” He was accompanied by Prof. Guo Biao, Assistant to the Dean of NAFR and Professor at the School of Finance, and Liu Quan, Chairman of IBI and Council Member of the RUC North America Alumni Association.

On November 13, Prof. Wu visited senior RUC alumnus Mr. Long Shengde, Class of 1951, and his wife Ms. Quan Ruxiang in Boston. Prof. Wu conveyed warm greetings on behalf of RUC and expressed gratitude for their longstanding support for the university’s development.

The delegation then visited the Harvard-Yenching Library and the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies at Harvard University, engaging in discussions on international academic cooperation in finance, scholarly publishing, and think tank development.

Prof. Wu emphasized that the world is undergoing a new technological revolution and a global economic rebalancing. He noted that Chinese and American academic communities should strengthen cooperation in addressing structural adjustments in the global economy, innovations in financial governance, and the challenges brought by technological transformation.

On November 15, Prof. Wu delivered a keynote speech titled “New Dynamics in the 15th Five-Year Plan Period: Opportunities and Challenges for China’s Economy, Finance, and Capital Markets in the AI Era.”

He stated that humanity is experiencing a fourth industrial revolution driven by artificial intelligence, a transformation that goes far beyond technological progress—it reshapes production relations and social structures. AI is profoundly transforming education, research, production models, entrepreneurship, and public governance.

Prof. Wu emphasized that AI will significantly enhance innovation efficiency and knowledge restructuring, becoming a key engine for China’s transition from factor-driven to innovation-driven growth.

Prof. Wu highlighted the structural changes facing China’s economy. After more than 40 years of reform and opening-up, China has shifted from a “shortage economy” to a “surplus economy.” Future growth must rely on structural optimization, demand activation, and institutional innovation rather than large-scale production expansion.

He stressed that achieving high-quality development requires maximizing the role of finance in resource allocation and innovation incentives. Capital markets should serve as a crucial force that encourages innovation and drives societal progress.

Regarding financial system reform, Prof. Wu proposed advancing rule-of-law-based, market-oriented, and internationalized reforms, strengthening investor protection and transparency, and fostering an innovation-driven, virtuous cycle within capital markets.
